I have some TV boxed sets that I watch quite frequently and while I am careful as I can with all my CDs and DVDs, I have had stuff become scratched in the past just from heavy use. If one of the disks in the boxed sets were to be scratched I’d have to buy the entire season again if I couldn’t get it resurfaced. How much did the video store charge you?

Starting a Video Store Business? Your View?
I just wanted to see some of your thoughts on starting a video rental store. I know most people think a regular video store may be a bad idea. But, I am thinking about being a little creative.
Also, remember that now Netflix, and Redbox must wait 28 days before renting new releases. So I would have new releases 28 days before Redbox or Netflix.
Also, let me give you a little background. I am in a small town, and the movie gallery closed down due to the whole company going under. Because, they had very high debt/income ratio, high overhead, and poor management.
So that leaves a void in my town. The way I am thinking about running my store would be to offer regular rentals, but also to offer a /month 1 at a time unlimited rentals package. However, there would be a 2 week restriction on new releases. That would allows my customers to still get movies 2 weeks before Redbox or Netflix. This would allow me to pay for the movies and turn a little profit in the first few weeks. If unlimited members wanted to rent a new release they would get a 50% discount off the regular price.
I also will have a very low overhead.
Just wanted to get some feedback on the idea, and see what you think.
I would also like some figures from different areas, and movie rental stores. So if anyone has worked at a movie store, and has some useful info, or figures like daily rentals, sales volumes, number of members, that would be great. Also, if you have that info, be sure to tell me how big your town is. Thank you.
Yes, I have researched and more restrictions are coming for those companies. I have spoken to multiple distributors.
The studios placed additional restrictions on Redbox, and Netflix because they were hurting sales and revenues. In exchange for discounts on dvds they must wait 28 days, after a dvds release date to rent the dvd to their customers. Brick and Mortar Video Rental Stores, and Retails like Walmart will sell/rent dvds 28 days before Redbox, and Netflix.

Demand for DVD rentals at a video store is described by the equation: Q = 4000 – 500P, where Q denotes the number of DVDs rented per week and P is the rental price in dollars.
a. Determine the point price elasticity of demand at P = .00.
b. What would be the new point price elasticity if price were raised to P = .50?
c. If the profit maximizing price is .50, what is the marginal cost of a rental?

Do you believe that late charge advertising in the video rental industry is meaningless?
I have never understood the meaning of a late charge in the video rental industry. If you rent a movie it is for a set period of time. If you bring it back "late" they charge you for another period of time. Why call it a late fee when it is a rental fee for another time period?
To make a point. Netflix advertises that there is no "late fee". But you must remain a member and pay a monthly charge to keep a video. If you decide to keep your current videos for the rest of your life, you would pay a monthly fee for the rest of your life. Isn’t this the same "cost" as a "late fee"?
I do agree that the cost of the mail vs video store is cheaper. I am just disagreeing with terminology.

Video Store Clerk Pet Peeves?
I work in a video store, and these are some of the things that drive me absolutely INSANE!
Leaving your returned movies on the counter instead of dropping them in the drop box (reguardless of the "PLEASE USE DROP BOX" sign).Trust me, this is the fastest and easiest way for your rental to NOT get checked in, or better yet, get picked up and taken home by another customer by mistake. But then you’ll come back and b*itch to us because your movie never got checked in?!
After signing your ticket, you hold the pen out for me and refuse to set it down until I take it from you.WHY?When there is pen cup sitting right in front of you?
"Where are your new releases?" Ummm…probably along the NEW RELEASE WALL! "Oh, they’re in alphabetical order?" No,we just put them out there randomly.
NO ONE ever has late fees.We make it up.
Is it just me or do these things annoy other video clerks?Or anyone else working in customer service? What are some of your customer-related pet peeves?
Who said I have poor customer service? These are pet peeves…EVERYONE HAS THEM. I’m just asking if anyone has any similiar experiences. Why do you think I’ve venting about it here? Because I’ve got a big ole fake smile plastered on my face when I’m standing behind the counter.
