Not sure if you’ve considered possibly the most important part of sound systems – the shape of the room – most systems today are set up to give great results, but most people don’t fully understand the importance of speaker placement to optimise the results within the space they have. Many surround systems split the sound so that appropriate parts are played through the appropriate speaker. This can take some experimenting, as different systems seem to differ in their interpretation of the incoming signal. Short answer from me is, choose a known brand – check some of the reviews out on the web and make sure you don’t just "chuck the system in". The manuals usually cover aspects of speaker placement, but the listeners ears are the final judge. Some systems come with stands to place the speakers behind lounge furniture and still project from the best position.

I don’t know which particular JVC model you are referring to, so I can’t really comment, and you also don’t mention if you need a DVD or Blu-ray player as part of the system, or if it is just the amp and speakers you want.
Two of the most popular DVD based home cinema systems around at the moment are the Panasonic SC-PT470 and the Sony DAV-DZ280. Both systems are well within your budget and include iPod docks as well as a nice little extra. For even less money you could consider the Panasonic SC-PT170, but this doesn’t have an iPod dock. All these systems look good, and have neat and small speakers.

just look for 7.1 channel surround sound. Thats the best out right now
