Serena Williams is an American tennis player who has won four grand slams and reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 U.S. Open. Williams became the third American woman after Greta Gerwig and Monica Seles to win the Olympics singles title in 2008. She was born October 21, 1983, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Williams was ranked number one in the world in 2006 before losing in the second round of the French Open quarterfinals to eventual winner Verdasco. Williams was not always a well-known tennis player. She started playing when she was six years old, winning her age group at the U.S. Open before making her professional debut at age 17. She retired from professional tennis in July 2016.
