I have a Panasonic SA-HT940 home theatre system and the HDMI port is messed up so I am looking into buying a new dvd player. I am wondering if it is possible to hook up a new dvd or blu-ray player to the old surround sound speaker system.

You can not connect the new DVD ot Blu Ray disc player directly to the old home theater system you have. But you can connect it directly to the tv and then connect an optical cable from the tv to the home theater to get the sound. You can also connect the optical cable directly to the home theater. Hope this will help you out.

Yes it is possible to use your old speakers with your old system, you just cannot use the receiver that with your old DVD surround. You will need to buy a real receiver in order to get surround with a new blu-ray player!
That will work perfect if your system is a 5.1 system otherwise you will need to buy a receiver accordingly. There are 2.1, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 so which ever one you have you will need to buy the correct receiver in order for your receiver to encode the surround effects properly. If you hook up a 5.1 to a 6.1 its not going to work properly.
