Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a great concept. But now that all these movies are being changed from purchases to rentals, I’m starting to get ticked off at Apple. First of all, they don’t give you a decision between renting and buying movies (which they should do). I know that a few movies on iTunes do have this option (like Ratatouille), but for some new releases (like The Simpsons Movie) you can forget about it.
Second, movies previously available for purchase are now becoming rentals. I admit that – is a little pricey for an iTunes movie, but it’s much cheaper than buying a movie at Wal Mart (with tax) or any brick and mortar movie store.
What’s your opinion? Thanks, your answers are always appreciated!

yep, i think itunes new movie deals sucks, 10 bucks for just an mp4, i rather buy a dvd with the nice case and can collect movies as well.

I agree with what you said.
I recently went to the New Releases section of the movies section at iTunes. I noticed that Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story had been released. I was so excited, until I found out I could not buy it. This also happened to me for The Simpson’s Movie. I want to buy these movies because they never get old, not rent them!

The worst idea ever? I don’t know about that but I do see your point. I think the idea itself is a good one but as usual, studio contractual deals (or lack of) have made it a bit awkward. I think there are plenty of people out there who would prefer to just rent it this way rather than going to the video store. Saves time and guarantees a title is available (who else gets annoyed when you go to the video store and everything you want to see is checked out, but since you are already there you rent something anyways).
They do have movies that have both rent and buy options. Those movies will have a link that says "view movie" and when you click it you can see your options. Are you sure certain movies that were available for purchase are only available to rent now? I haven’t noticed that… Most of the movies that were just added (such as 300, Spiderman 3, Transformers, Superbad, Simpsons, Dodgeball, among others) and are available to rent are 20th Century Fox or Sony movies. They just finalized a deal to allow their movies to be rented through iTunes but not purchased. I believe they are worried about price cutting their bigger retailers (such as WalMart). Actually I think most studios are on board with the rentals. It seems Apple and studios have been feuding over what to sell movie downloads for. I’ve read that many studios want pretty much DVD price for these downloads, which if you ask me is absurd. Actually… browse through the $5 bin at WalMart or the $5 sale movies at any movie retailer like Best Buy and you’ll find a whole mess of movies sold for $10 on iTunes. That just doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.
Oh well. I hope some of my nonsense is helpful. I’m intrigued by this topic and more amazed how a great idea, which seems should be relatively simple can be screwed up by the major studios.
