Hey, im writing a article for my blog, and I was just wonder who sets the charges for cinema tickets? The studios or the cinema chains such as Cineworld & the Odeon etc.? Prices seem to have shot up recently in times of the recession.

The chains set the charges while giving some money back to the distributor.
Some chains have new theaters, very comfortable with Stadium seating, so they may charge more.
The price of the ticket is extremely cheap in USA (the national average is only $7.18 for 2008) because chains make a lot of money by selling a few cents worth of popcorn for a few dollars and all those drinks and candies.
In Europe, like in France, where there’s no food or drinks, the chains have to make all their profits from the tickets price, so it’s two or three times more expensive (about 10 euros = $13), so a lot of people buy cards for 10 tickets at a better price.
I’m French and I like the American system where for the same price, you can have popcorns and drinks OR, if you want to save money, you pay 2 or 3 times less but you cannot buy food or drinks. In France, you pay 2 or 3 times more and you don’t have any food or drink.
For me, movie tickets are like gas prices. Soooooooooo much cheaper in USA, and still, people think it’s too much!

The ticket price is set by the theater chain. As a result, prices will vary for each theater. Once the theater and showtime for the movie you wish to purchase tickets for is determined, the prices and ticket types for that showtime will appear on the first transaction page.
As with the ticket price, the theater determines their service fee. These fees are also displayed on the transaction page next to the ticket price.

It depends in how many films the movie chain gets. The more the cheaper the tickets can be.
The film company sets the prices. If you’ve noticed the movie theater tickets for different chains are around the same amount of money. Or at least that I’ve noticed.

The theatres set the prices, although they have to give up a set percentage of the takings to the film distributors (e.g. if a cinema is borrowing ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ from a distributor, they may have to give the distributor 50 per cent of the ticket earnings. For a less popular film the percentage may be slightly less, or the percentage may get lower the longer the film has been out.) There are quite a few things that influence ticket prices. For instance, gas and electricity prices have risen sharply and it costs a lot to run a huge building such as a cinema. Food prices have gone up and sweets bring in lower profits. Piracy is on the up. All I can say is try an independent cinema, their tickets are often cheaper than the money-grabbing chains!
