Sorry if I sound stupid, but I have an English project where we have to compare a movie to Groundhog day. In groundhog day Phil becomes a better character so.. Please give hints! Would also help if the movies were reasonably common.

A Christmas Carol comes to mind where Eb Scrooge becomes a better person. I think this is the closet to Groundhog Day that I can really think of right now. Very similar in a way.
(It’s A Wonderful Life" didn’t have anything to do with being a better person,He already was great. He just wondered what life would be like if he was never born)…great movie.loved it.
I think maybe Tin Cup" with Kevin Costner in it may fit. He is a washed up golf player/drunk..who gets his act together & ends up doing good & getting a girlfriend.
Also the movie "Hancock" with Will Smith the star is a bad drunk & mean foul mouth super hero who doesn’t really care about much but he really changes throughout the movie with help from a PR guy. In the end he does a lot of good & saves a lot of people.

Its a wonderful life is a good film.
If you want an animated one then try Brother Bear where a hunter kills a bear because it kills his brother in a fight and then the man finds out the the bear was a mother. The spirits guide him and turn him into a bear and he looks after the baby bear. In the end he becomes human again and realises he has become a better person.

The Fisher King – egocentric DJ causes a man to murder and commit suicide, and must comfort one of the victim’s estranged and delusional husband.
The Doctor (with William Hurt) – a bitter and entirely uncaring doctor becomes infected with a horrible cancer, which changes his ways.
Blood In, Blood Out – story of a latino family’s upbringing in gang-ridden L.A., where the main brother goes from a thug to a police officer.
Carlito’s Way (in a sense) – a once powerful and idolized gangster tries to travel a straight and narrow road, but his past follows him like a shadow.
Schindler’s List – a seemingly selfish and narcissistic man ends up gaining enough influence and power to save hundreds of Jews during the holocaust.

One that comes to mind that no one has mentioned is "As Good as it Gets", with Jack Nicolson. He even speaks the line to Helen Hunt’s character: "You make me want to be a better man"

Ghost Town is a recent comedy, where the main character is a moron that eventually turns into a good person.
