By Arizona law, a landlord must release any security deposit being held within 14 days of the termination of a rental agreement. My rental agreement terminated on September 30, and I haven’t heard anything from the landlord. I’ve been advised that I need to give a written demand for the amount I am owed, giving a specified amount of time for them to release it. I can’t find any information on what a "reasonable" amount of time would be.

Is it legal for an apartment complex to keep your security deposit?
We were released from our 12 month lease (after residing for 7 months) by our apartment complex on April 1 2008. There were no penalties (i.e. owing more rent, etc). We were told the our deposit would be refunded when a new tenant moved in. Now I am told it could be until August, or if the new tenant signs a new one-year lease.
Is this legal? If they released us from our rental obligations (it was their decision), how can they keep our security deposit?
Any help is appreciated.
