(22 Oct 2013) SANDRA BULLOCK, MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY KICK OFF AWARDS SEASON AT THE HOLLYWOOD FILM AWARDS
While walking the red carpet for the Hollywood Film Awards Sandra Bullock took a moment to tease pal Camila Alves and share a quick inside joke with Jane Fonda.
"Sorry it's a little secret club we have. She's drunk," joked Bullock.
The 49-year-old "Gravity" star said she owes a debt of gratitude to the her tight-knit group of actress friends.
"Contrary to popular belief the women in this business love and support each other so much," she said. "We're honest when we're jealous. We can say it. We're gonna go 'argh! You kind of rocked it, a little envious.' But you know what? It's such a small group that you have to remain tight and I'm lucky that I've met some extraordinary women in this business who are just very good to me. I hope we are good to each other."
Bullock was honored Monday (21 October) with the Hollywood Actress Award at the 17th annual event, which bills itself as "the official launch of awards season." As frenzied photographers shouted her name, Bullock calmly asked one photog to relax before resuming her red carpet pose.
Halloween came early this year for the Oscar winner and her 3-year-old son Louis. Over the weekend the pair was photographed in matching skeleton costumes on their way to a party. Bullock explained how she created the elaborate makeup for her look.
"Well I think it goes back to, my mother was an opera singer. She used to have all the stage makeup and I used to play all the time and create. But look, you go on the internet, find a picture, trace it out on your face and then color it in. It's like color by numbers is basically what I did."
Hollywood Actor Award honoree Matthew McConaughey attended the soiree with wife Camila Alves.
"Actor of the year is what I'm told is what I'm getting tonight. So I thought about my last year, I thought about the last few years, I thought about my last 21 years (in the industry), done over 50 films and over the last few years really been doing some that people have been grabbing onto and they've been sticking to people. And performances I've been doing, they've been sticking to people. That feels good," said McConaughey.
When it comes to that elusive family-career balance, the 43-year-old father of three says it never gets any easier.
"I don't think it's easier. My family comes with me so that makes it easier for sure," he said.
McConaughey and Jared Leto were honored for their work in "Dallas Buyers Club." The Thirty Seconds from Mars" lead singer plays a transsexual woman named Rayon in the film.
"It's incredible what happens when people find out that you have a really nice pair of legs, you know?" joked Leto. "You end up here. It's great. It's been really fun and just an amazing couple of weeks for us."
Julia Roberts was honored along with the cast of her upcoming drama "August: Osage County." The Oscar winner posed for photos with producer Jerry Weintraub.
"The best part is getting dressed, getting home at 9:30, having some vodka there, having some more vodka at home," said Weintraub before receiving the Hollywood Legend Award.
Other honorees included director Lee Daniels, Michael B. Jordan, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy and Harrison Ford, who received the Hollywood Career Achievement Award.
