Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Review (Part 1 of 7)

www.redlettermedia.com – Finally it’s here! The truly epic review making educational video of the 1999 film “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” There was so much to discuss with this film it had to be long so please don’t complain. If you think it’s too long then don’t watch it. In this opening segment I discuss the major flaw of The Phantom Menace which is the characters and the lack of connection with the audience.

@Malenock86 Right on. If you haven’t read this article please do. It’s Gary Kurtz clearly laying out the reasons why Lucas is a complete schmuck who let the series run off the rails immediately after the superb ESB. filmthreat com/interviews/8/

@UltraGokin – I do agree movies should stand on there own. But I disagree with the rest. . George Lucas knows what hes doing. I never said he is a genius in terms of movie making or writing. I said he is a MARKETING genius. People are still debating nonstop about a movie a decade old. It still is making a difference no matter how you look at it

it wasn’t any where near the original trilogy, but it isnt that bad… it was still an okay film. I thought attack of the clones was worse

@Vidhole Yeah, it succeeded as a kids’ film and could pass off for a guilty pleasure. The other two were a disaster though, Clones especially.

In what way does he kick ass? He says nothing, and dies in his first full battle. Admit it, you’re being fooled by red skin and spikes.

Yeah, seriously. What the fuck was George Lucas thinking???

  13. Tmartin1438 says

    November 8, 2010 at 4:03 am

@ERoBB1 I think he would’ve been cool if he had at least a little bit of character development in the movie with more than 3 lines, and if the whole plot in general wasn’t a complete mess. Same with Dooku, if they had dooku in the first one and showed how he became disillusioned with the republic and left, then tempted by sidious. But Lucas clearly came up with all this on the fly, and had noone to proofread/give some constructive criticism. This review hit the nail on the head

@Forlo12345 Simple…he shall dollar bills and couldn’t give two shits about actaually making a decent movie with any of the damn new ones.

Personally I liked the prequels. At the same time I totally understand and agree with pretty much all the criticism and flaws he presents. The original series was infinitely better than the prequels, but the prequels threw enough cool aliens and scenery along with action that I did enjoy myself.

@Pilot9000 I know. Ugh, he ruined star wars for me. I think the movie “Fanboys” summed it up very well when they ended the movie with one of the characters asking, “Guys…what if the movie [Phantom Menace] sucks?” Then suddenly, everyone around looked at him with disappointment. Yep, that was the same disappointment I felt when I saw all 3 of them.

(1 of 2) I want to say first of all you’re a fucking genius, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve re-watched this review, because of how good a point you made. We all know Lucas is a fucking idiot, and that the Prequel Trilogy was a total clusterfuck, but I think you’re wrong regarding how hard it is to fuck up the back-story to Star Wars. If you think about it, the original trilogy was very cut-and dry, Rebels trying to take down the Empire, and Luke trying to save his father.

  21. theEnLITenedOne says

    November 9, 2010 at 8:16 am

(2 of 2) The Prequel trilogy even if done by somebody not retarded would be very complicated. The original was an up-hill battle for the good-guys, so the prequel would have to be a downhill battle where the good guys ultimately are fucked. You’d have to show a stable Republic, have Darth Sidious scheme to disrupt order and also corrupting Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader. And Darth Sidious would need connections to help him run his whole plan. And you’d need to show Sidious gaining full control.

Honestly I hated number 1, but if you’re willing to put this much effort into reviewing a movie that you don’t like, you don’t have a son because you’ve never seen a vagina.

I enjoyed your review, even though I disagree. I can describe characters easily, but maybe that’s because I read the books as well, where they were given more development, not sure.
