Yesterday, Netflix announced that they’re now primarily a streaming movie company, and upped the price of DVD rental by a dollar while instituting a new, streaming-only plan for .99. From what you guys know, will Netflix quit renting DVDs and Blu-rays by mail?
I feel that this would be a huge mistake and an over-estimation of the popularity of streaming. Isn’t Blu-ray supposed to be the next thing? Now streaming comes along? You can’t listen to commentaries or watch special features with streaming. Plus, they’d lose many customers who only want or only can rent DVDs (like me). They’d also be in competition with other streaming services, whereas they and Blockbuster are the only two companies that offer mail service.
So from what you can tell, will they eliminate mail delivery? What about Blockbuster? Thank you.

I know they’re not eliminating it right now, but do you believe they will EVER eliminate it?

Yes, I believe they will eliminate DVD shipments but not for several years. A major part of the service is making movies available for our computers. Right now the only way to get high definition on our computers is with blu-ray. When Netflix is able to deliver high definition streaming to computers, then they will start planning the end of DVD shipments. The only change for you and I for some time is a $1 increase.

No, they won’t. And not they aren’t a primary streaming company.

They aren’t eliminating, just recognizing that many people may want to just use the streaming video services rather than DVD delivery.
Netflix doesn’t have the distribution deals yet that allow them to stream all of their DVD’s. While it may happen in the future, it hasn’t happened yet.
I truthfully use both service types equally.

I got the same note, I do not think that they are eliminating the dvd program, they are just introducing another paying option. If you mostly watch the streaming videos you can pay the lesser amount and just watch them. They also have an option for dvd and streaming unlimited, which used to be their only plan and they just raised the price by 1 dollar. I do not know about blockbuster, sry.

Will they ever eliminate it…yes! And its just a matter of time. First dvd…then much farther down the line….Blu Ray.

If they do ever eliminate dvds, I’m sure there will be small companies that offer that service. Anyway, there are other companies that offer dvds by mail like GreenCine. I don’t work for them, or anything, but they seem like a good option.
