I don’t lived in the States so i have never used a rental service such as Netflix or Gamefly. Just wanted to know…how is it possible to keep a DVD or game as long as you like with rental services without any form of late fee? How do they earn their money and is it possible to keep the DVD or game for a lifetime (in theory)?

well with netflix you pay a monthly fee. so if you have a plan where you can get unlimited number of movies a month but only one at a time and never send it back, you pay ten dollars a month for that movie. i dont know what they do if you keep it, but it seems like they would make enough money…

with Netflix/gamefly/blockbyster total access, you can keep it as long as you want, because of a mothly price for the service. Lets say you keep something for like a month or so. You are "paying" for it through the serive you bought, usally around 15 a month

They are betting that they will make enough money from renting each item several times to honest, punctual people to offset the losses from unreturned items. There is also a limit to the number of items you can rent at any one time, so you have to return at least one item to rent another.
