I’m new to this. Can anyone walk me through the dangfangled confounded process of trying to back up a copyright dvd to my laptop so I can save battery life while watching a movie with out running the dvd. Seems its a long drawn out pain in the a$$. Need help. Also, if the dvd is like, Lonesome Dove, which is 4 1/2 hrs long, will it cause more problems?

What you are proposing is going to make little or no difference to battery life. Also to do what you want you are going to have to circumvent the copyright encryption on the DVD, that’s illegal, but up to you. Do a Google search for the required software.
If you want to watch it why not use a domestic DVD player.

There is no legal way to copy protected DVDs to hard disk unless the copyright owner specifically gives you permission. Some of the new DVD/BluRays do come with an online download link.
Otherwise, you’ll be in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and subject to major financial penalties. They made no exception for personal use.
