I have been copying DVD rentals to VHS to watch later. The problem is, there sems to be some kind of gain control on the vcr. This is decreasing the impact of the movie soundtrack. When anything louder happens in the movie, the audio seems to drop.
I’m not expecting 5 channel surround or anything, I just want to know how to preserve the audio levels.

High quality tape and video recorder, you still will not get the DVD quality though. But a high end VCR and connectivity (gold connectors, HDMI cables) and at a very low speed will get you close.

guess what? it is totally illegal to copy dvd rentals to VHS. so even though the answer is pretty damn obvious, i would not help you in your criminal activities.
