i used to work at blockbuster during the mid 90s and i remember you couldnt just buy a new release movie when it came out on video you would have to rent it because they would cost like.99 ANnd after a while like 4 to 5 months they would be available to buy for a reasonable price. there would be some movies mostly children movies that u could buy immediately but the rest would be only available for rental, i wonder if thats hurt the rental industry?

I don’t ever remember a VHS tape being 100 bucks.I remember allot of video store charged around 100 bucks if you didn’t return a movie. If you lost one it was way cheaper to buy one at wal-mart than what the video stores charged.

VHS tapes were never $100.00 (you’re exaggerating). Blockbuster video came out in the early 80’s – Purchasing videos did not hurt the rental industry (even today) Pirating has!

Yeah I do remember. When I was a kid we have to wait like 3 o 4 month until a movie was released for rent. Also I remember we used to sign a receipt and it said that if you lost the Video or damage it you would pay around $60 USD. I think the low cost of the movies today is not good for the rental industry, it is not enough just rent movies, now the business sells the movies and not even talk about piracy! now you can get a fake copy of the video before the premier on theaters. Where I live 3 video rental stores closed up last moth.

In the 1980’s and 1990’s, many movies were released on VHS and priced for rental, often at prices of $70 and up. This way the movie companies got what they considered a fair return from the video rental companies, who could get a good cash flow from popular movies for months.

Yes, before the advent of DVD players the video tapes cost between $60 and $80 when they were new releases. The video chains were forced to pay this much for their shops in order to even compete. Then about 4 to 6 months later, the video will be released for sale to the public for around $20. But by then, the same title videos were no longer renting as well.
Then DVD became a more collectible medium, so they took advantage of the ability to produce high quantities for low price and sell them directly to the public.
