Anytime I talk to two friends who live in different parts of California they’re always watching DVDs that aren’t released yet. They say they are getting them from the rental stores (and I believe them).
For those of you who don’t know anything about movie releases. The distributor gives video stores the movies a week early so it is possible they COULD release them early.
They are supposed to release them at the same time; doesn’t mean they do.

In California it’s easier to get studio screener copies. Bootlegs are really easy to get a hold of. Most video stores (at least corporate owned) are supposed to release to the public only on the assigned release date, however some people can get tight with the owners/employees and get to see them early.

DVD’s are usually released everywhere at the same time(sometimes countries vary but not often). Either your friends know A LOT of people or they’re pirated.
