Dance Moms
Lifetime introduced Dance Moms in 2011, and the show seems to be doing well. There are a decent amount of viewers for the episodes. The show is based in Pennsylvania, with the Abby Lee Dance Company. What is very interesting is that the career of some of the young dancers and artists are followed. There is a good chance several of them will become huge celebrities in the end.
The girls at the dance company range in age from 8 to 15. They have to travel to various dance competitions in different locations from one week to the next. They compete both individually and in group events. The mothers are a big part of the success or failure as to those outcomes. On one hand, Dance Moms depicts them as being very protective of the group.
On the other, it is a cut throat business with a great deal of jealousy. They keep a close eye on the other girls and their talents. They also keep a close eye on rivals as they often see them again at other competitions. Abby Lee Miller is the owner and chorographer at the dance studio. From time to time, there are guest choreographers that take part in the show for the girls.
Each week, the eyes are on the chart that Miller creates. This shows how she thinks the girls are stacking up in a pyramid style format. The girls and the moms often react in a variety of ways based on that chart. Miller has stated the chart system was never used at the dance studio prior to the start of this reality TV show. It was introduced as a tool for her to use by the producers.
Dance Moms is a very controversial type of reality TV show. A great deal of the footage depicts mothers that are too harsh on their kids and that are too difficult with each other. There are viewers that express concern over the well-being of the children that are on the show and how they are being treated. Even so, season 4 of Dance Moms began in January 2014.
There was a spin off in the works, but it didn’t do very well. Dance Moms Miami began in April of 2012. By September of 2012, it was canceled. In January of 2014, a mom and her two daughters were removed from Dance Moms. This was due to an assault the mom was part of at a dance competition in New York. She is fighting it in court, and says the fight was scripted.
