"A new release DVD rental costs d dollars for 1 day and .00 for each additional day. The first two days of standard release rental costs .00 less than the first day of a new release rental, and .25 for each day thereafter. Carl rented two new releases and one standard release for five days and it cost him .75. What is the value of d?
A) .25
B) .50
C) .25
D) .00
E) .75"
I don’t know why the book incorrectly made A and C the same, but the answer key says the right answer is D. I don’t have a clue how they got that.
Also, could you tell me when for a Standard Release DVD, is that ".00 less" for the first two days counted for EACH of the two days, or for the two days together?

Hi Samian’s 21st Account
The New release cost N = d + 5(n-1) (where n is the no of days rented)
The Standard rel cost S= d-3 + 2.25(n-2) (for n=>2)
So toal cost for 2 new and 1 standard for 5 days
= 2N + s = 61.75
= 2(d+5*4) + d-3 +2.25(3) = 61.75
= 2d + 40 + d – 3 +6.75 = 61.75
3d = 61.75 – 43.73d = 18
d=$ 6.00
Choice D
the $3.00 less is counted for two days and not each day.

ok here’s the solution in your problem;
A = new release DVD = d + 5*4 = d + 20
B = standard release = d -3 + 2.25*3 = d + 3.75
C = total cost = 61.75
therefore;
C = 2A + B
61.75 = 2(d + 20) + d + 3.75
61.75 = 2d + 40 + d + 3.75
61.75 = 3d + 43.75
18 = 3d
d = 6.00…………….answer
first days 0f new release = 6.00
first 2days of standard release = 6.00 – 3 = 3.00
thats it
