“Avatar” looks like something created in MSPaint compared to this. :)
But no really, the special effects are quite incredible for 1902! This looks like a 1920’s movie.

@ThrilloVanHouten 1920’s movies started having sound already. they had better effects, i think ;)

Wonderful film… too bad Melies went bankrupt because Thomas Edison’s company made a copy of it and distributed it in the US before Melies got here. I swear, if I had a time machine, Thomas Edison would get a good punch in the mouth.

This movie is funny because of how incredibly inaccurate it is. Not to mention the terrible special effects.
Hell, most films from 100 years ago are comedies of errors these days.
rainmillr says
@mythbuster43 Of course, people will say the same thing about Avatar in 100 years. You do the best you can with the knowledge that you have, and try to make something that will astound the audiences of your time. A Trip to the Moon certainly succeeded in 1902.
mythbuster43 says
@rainmillr You know I never thought about that, but you’re probably right.
A Trip to the Moon was the Avatar of a century ago!

@mythbuster43 Except you know, Méliès invented the base for the effect we have now. And I find this kind of effect far more believable that a synthetic image on a screen that doesn’t even have any kind of reality in our material world. I’m sorry, but it hurts me to read “terrible” for them. Also, it is based on books older than this movie, which have a lot of inaccuracies in them because of what Science was then, and the fear space’s unknown represented then.
ZRedPoppy says
@educassiano Or maybe Buzz Aldrin.
ZRedPoppy says
This is simply a wonder of creativity and imagination for a then new-born media.Even the decors are wonderful. Méliès was a genius. If only the movie industry could go back to that time where it was not some kind of onanist and self-absorbed art neither that huge money making monster it is nowadays… One can dream.
