I have an old Sony Vision Hi8 DCR-TRV58 NTSC model camcorder. I know it’s old, from 2002 I think. I would like to transfer video I have on the camcorder cassets onto my computer to edit.
I understand I have to digitalize the video first since it is analog. Can someone give me instructions on how to do it and which cables I need?
I have the s-video cable for right now, but I guess I might need more than that…
Thanks!

Hey ~
first off, you’ll need audio cables, as well, probably RCA’s (the red and white ones, like the ones your DVD player or Playstation uses to send media to the TV), because S-Video doesn’t carry audio.
A lot of cameras will take a feed straight from yours, especially if they have a dubbing feature. If not, you need to find an external deck (NOT a VCR!) and run the cables into the deck. I would suggest MiniDV as the tape deck to record with – then use this to import into the computer.
Check your local cable access station, or look for an editor on craigslist who can dub it for cheap. Or you can search for a local dubbing or transfer business, although there are less and less of these.
Good luck!

I have been reading your articles during my smoke break, and I must admit the whole article has been very enlightening and very well written. I thought I would let you know that for some reason this blog does not view well in IE 8. I wish Microsoft would quit changing stuff. I have a question for you. Would you mind swapping blog roll links? That would be really neat!
